The river Mosel has its source in France and runs through Luxembourg before entering the river Rhine near Koblenz in Germany. In July ’16 we took some days to explore its course in between Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues by bike.
The bike trail along the river is nearly even with almost no meters in height to be overcome. Also, there are many lovely villages and small towns with distances of only about 10 kilometers in between them, which makes this route fun also for relaxed bike holidays. And if you’re tired of biking, you will find boats which connect the towns (e.g. Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trabach).
In the villages and towns along the river there are many well-preserved old buildings. While half-timbered houses prevail in places like Bernkastel-Kues and Pünderich, which leads to a medieval atmosphere, Traben-Trabach offers many art nouveau buildings.
Because of the mild climate in this region you will find many vineyards and wine tourism alongside the Mosel.
We took it easy and only did around 20 kilometers per day. Like this, there’s still enough time to take a bath in the Mosel, drink a wine in one of the little wine taverns and stroll through the villages.

Drinks: Zum alten Bahnhof (Zell) is located in a charming old railstation
Food: Bahnhof Cues (Bernkastel-Kues) is also located in an old railstation and offers delicious food
